Contemplating BC Artists
1 Hr Documentary for Knowledge Network
Filmmaker and visual artist Brian Johnson contemplates the work of a number of BC’s artists. He will examine both the challenges and inspirations on an individual basis - illuminating strategies used by artists who choose to live and work on the Northwest Frontier. Johnson identifies four prescient themes whereby the particular circumstances of BC artists might be examined: Vancouver as a Postmodern utopia, the proximity of nature, the freedom of the frontier and community. These issues will inform, on varying levels, the discourse surrounding each artist in question. Ultimately the film will respond to questions of why they live where they live, how their physical and cultural environment influences their work, and offer insight into their various processes. This unique approach will bring the viewer closer to understanding the artists and their work.
